Majority of the populations in Terengganu are Malays (90~94%), Chinese (about 3~4% %), and others.

The main languages spoken are Bahasa Melayu (Malays) in which all races are well spoken in Malays using local dialects.

Interestingly, peoples from different district have a slightly different dialects.

Here is some example of the local language should you need to use it:

ENGLISH BAHASA MALAYSIA LOCAL DIALECT

How are you? Apa Khabar? Guane Gamok?

May I ask you…? Boleh saya tanya..? Tupang tanye…?

How much is this.. (price)? Berapa harga? Berapa riyal ?

* I will compile a long list of the Terengganu dialects and will be posted again here.

But dont worry, all peoples in Terengganu will understand if you use standard Bahasa Malaysia. There are a lot of peoples understand English as well.

If you visit the Islands, majority of the boats/chalet operators can speak English!

Welcome to Terengganu – we have nice and polite peoples here!
