There are 5 recorded leatherback turtle landing in Rantau Abang, Terengganu Malaysia this year.

I am very excited to see and touch the baby leatherback turtles or hatchling – but I guess the eggs recorded on 16th July 2010 will not hatches. Normally it takes about 60 days for the eggs to hatch. But now it passed the grace period.

I hope the other four will provide a better results.

Is it due to the eggs not fertilised?
Is it no more male leatherback turtle?
Or the method we use to conserve the egg in the container need to be reviewed?

From my understanding a leatherback turtle or any turtles will landing again to nest the egss in an interval of 10 days. The mother will choose to deliver male or female based on the location they decide to nest the eggs (open space or under the tree or nearer to the sea). The temperature and condition of the place will determine whether the babies are male or female.

In our conservation of the leatheback turtles, I guess we need to balance on the production of male and female turtles.

If the eggs not hatched due to unfertilised eggs, the extinct of the leatherback turtles in a long run cannot be avoided anymore.

If we would like to see different results, we need to change our approach.

Let’s save our turtles!
